IEF 203 Research Methodology

The course focuses on key concepts of Research Methodology, including Research Problem, Research Design, Sampling Techniques, Research Proposal, Data Collection, Data Analysis, and Research Report. With hands-on learning experience, students gain the knowledge and skills to assess generated and collected data. Students apply the basic steps and principles required in sorting, organizing, summarizing, and describing variables and testing and measuring different linkages and associations between and among variables in their research and writing-up processes. Additionally, students analyze experimental designs utilized in confirmatory research studies and establish causal relationships between interventions and outcomes. They also investigate and interpret surveys, results, ethical protocol in research, effective communication of data, biases of researchers, integrity, the writing up of findings and other related issues.

What you'll learn

Identify and evaluate the clarity, strengths and weaknesses of problem statements in research reports.
Determine the research problem’s theoretical or logical rationale and identify the research question under investigation.
Appraise the thoroughness and relevance of the literature review and assess the researchers’ theoretical perspectives and/or a priori assumptions.
Evaluate the appropriateness of the research methodology for the study of research reports, assess the clarity and consistency of their results, and offer alternative interpretations.
Discuss the implications of the study of the research reports, given their strengths and weaknesses.
Structure and present research findings by formulating a robust argument rooted in solid evidence and utilizing various methods and tools of research.

Compare and contrast the benefits of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
Distinguish the qualities of a literature review and reflect on the value of writing a brief literature review specific to their project proposal.
Identify appropriate tools for gathering data for their projects (e.g., methods of collecting data: interviews, questionnaires and observation).
Identify and discuss the complex issues inherent in selecting a research problem, choosing an appropriate research design, and implementing a research project.
